Cyclone 'Gabrielle' caused unprecedented damage in New Zealand (Photo: abc.net.au).
Heavy rains and very strong winds, up to 140 km/h, brought down trees, damaged roads and caused flooding on thousands of hectares.
The scale of the damage is unprecedented. Particularly on the North Island, with major flooding and landslides in Northland, Coromandel, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay. The agricultural sector is seriously affected with loss of livestock, many flooded orchards, damage to road and electrical infrastructure.
It is still too early for a full estimate of the damage, but the New Zealand government has announced initial aid of NZD 4 million (USD 2.5 million) for farmers and producers.
