This treaty is seen by some as a boost that will improve agricultural exports to China, and by others as a marginal deal given that the ASEAN-China free trade area had already reduced custom taxes in 2010.
Cambodia and China have just signed a free trade agreement. Cambodian officials say the deal focuses on improving agricultural exports to China. Covering 340 products of which 95% would be exempt from customs duties. Includes peppers, pineapples, vegetables and fruit.
An agreement between the 2 countries, dating from 2019, had authorized the entry of Cambodian bananas into China. Cambodia's total banana exports increased from around 10,000 tonnes in 2018 to 157,000 tonnes last year. The 2 countries have also concluded an agreement to pave the way for exports of fresh mangoes.
Keen to diversify its markets, Cambodia is also in negotiations for a free trade agreement with South Korea and Mongolia.
