Costa Rica presented its first climate-smart greenhouse, an initiative supported by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the Republic of Korea.
Located at the Los Diamantes Experimental Station in Guápiles de Pococí, the complex extends over 2,500 square metres and consists of two greenhouses for growing tomatoes and sweet peppers, as well as a control room, a nursery and a warehouse for agricultural materials.
This greenhouse incorporates advanced technology for remote crop monitoring and management. It is equipped with a sophisticated system of sensors that monitor variables such as light, temperature, movement, humidity and atmospheric pressure, transmitting the information in real time to a cloud platform.
Thanks to this system, it is possible to make automatic adjustments to cooling, heating, lighting, irrigation and ventilation, which significantly improves the efficiency and quality of the crops. The establishment of this smart greenhouse not only optimises agricultural production, but also contributes to Costa Rica's strategy to improve the commercialisation of its agricultural products, promoting more sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact.
In addition, the project has received technical assistance from the Korea Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (KAIST) and Shinhan A-Tec Co. Ltd.
With a non-reimbursable investment of USD 700,000 from the Korea-CABEI Trust Fund (KTF), this initiative aims to modernise and optimise the country's agricultural production, in collaboration with the National Institute of Agricultural Technology and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
