Spain is number one in Europe for organic farming

The most important areas devoted to organic farming are in Spain.

According to the latest data from the European Commission, in Spain there were 1.8 million hectares of organic farming in 2011. Spain is at the top of European rankings and ahead of Italy (1.1 million hectares) and France (0.9 million hectares).

Across the EU, organic surfaces increased from 5.7 million hectares in 2002 to 9.7 million hectares in 2011. This represents only 5.4% of the total agricultural area.
