In 2020, Ecuador exported more than $ 7.5 billion of agricultural products, which means an increase of 13.35% compared to 2019.
One of the main objectives for the next decade, according to the National Agricultural Plan, designed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Ecuador, is to increase exports, reaching $10 billion in 2030 and having ten products above the $50 million a year.
Carlos Furche, former Minister of Agriculture of Chile, believes this strategy developed in Ecuador will open doors for new producers, products, and new markets, in order to increase the income and quality of life of the rural population.
The Plan is divided into three categories: export products (bananas, broccoli, pitahaya, palm oil, flowers, cocoa beans, canned fruits, tobacco); agricultural products of the basic basket; and agricultural products with economic potential based on the study of secondary sources (cassava, mango, soursop, avocado, grape, melon, papaya, passion fruit, dried bean, pineapple, tree tomato, yellow carrot, sweet potato, babaco, chia, blackberry, granadilla, rice, zucchini, Virola, naranjilla, uvilla, taro, balsa, teak, bamboo, fresh cheese, milk, honey, beef and pork).
The plan will be executed with the support of FAO, through the Hand in Hand initiative, which integrates econometric models including productive and social variables to highlight territorial weaknesses and thus increase their agricultural potential, to facilitate sustainable rural development and agricultural transformation.
They will pay attention to production in agroecological zones, and that each crop obtains certain necessity, in addition they will improve agricultural conditions through technological development and innovation, thus reducing the productive risk of the agricultural producer when planting crops.
