The development on organic farming

With the objective of achieving food security and better health for the population.

The ministry in charge of Agriculture has announced the intention to convert into organic farming 50% of agricultural output by 2020. With implementation of standards and certifications, subsidy system , the agricultural sector will receive various incentives for partial and total conversion to organic production.

The government's plan also included an awareness of Mauritian farmers to permaculture. With crops better suited to local and climatic constraints, the use of chemical inputs (55 000 tonnes of fertilizer and 2 000 tonnes of pesticides a year) could be reduced.

An information and promotion campaign should promote consumption of organic local produce , or at least from farming.
