Jamaica’s mango exports volume to increase in 2022

Jamaica’s St Julian and East Indian mango exports in 2022 are projected to double in volume, as the demand from foreign markets continues to increase, according to local media.
Until week 2, the Ministry of Agriculture had received 13 applications to export mango to the U.S this season, 4 more potential exporters than Jamaica had last year.
In 2022, Jamaica projects to export 178.000 kilos to the U.S., doubling the 89.000 kilos in 2021 and quadrupling the 41.000 kilos in 2020.
However, the success of the campaign is dependent on whether mango farmers meet export requirements in time for the beginning of the season. To be authorized to export to the US, exporters have to pass the Plant Quarantine and Produce Inspection of the ministry. Last year, only 2 of the 9 applicants compiled with the requirement.
Exports to the U.K and Canada are also expected to grow. Worth mentioning that exports to these countries last year were affected by flight availability amid pandemic restrictions, as well as slow uptake by exporters after the resumption of exports to the UK market.
From April to October 2021, almost 600.000 kg of mangoes were exported to Canada and the U.K.
