Kenya: Farmers to Sign Contracts With Buyers
Kenya
Tuesday 04 September 2007
Horticultural Crop Development Authority is signing up farmers in Bomet district to help them market their produce.
Making the announcement yesterday, the authority's manager in charge of Bomet, Narok South and Narok districts, Mr Charles Siso said those registered will sit down with buyers and sign legal binding contracts that would ensure availability of markets, and better prices for the farmer's crops.
Mr Siso stated that in the past, farmers have had problems in getting markets, resulting in a majority of them selling their crop to middlemen at throwaway prices.
The new development will bring the farmers and the buyers together to agree on how will be bought, depending on the prevailing market prices.
Mr Siso was speaking at the district headquarters yesterday, during the launch of the Authority's Bomet branch.
The chairman of Bomet district Stakeholders Association, Mr John Serem and the association's treasurer, Joshua Ng'eno attended the ceremony. The horticultural industry will also register farmers' association as exporters, to market the farmers' produce abroad.
