Cabbage and broccoli protect from radiation
FJ
Already known for their anti-cancer properties, broccoli and cabbage can also protect from radiation.
Researchers from Georgetown University have shown that DIM (3,3 '-diindolylmethane) molecule, which is contained in cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli), can provide protection against the lethal effects of a strong radioactivity among rodents.
The study published in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) recounts the experience of rats. They all received each day during 2 weeks lethal doses of gamma rays. One group received a daily injection of DIM. All the rats untreated with DIM died in 10 days, however 60% of the animals treated with DIM were still alive after 30 days.
Cabbage and broccoli protect alive tissue and limit the side effects of radiation.
