Garlic was the most exported Spanish produce to the United States.
Spanish produce exports to the United States reached 29,663 tons and a value of 84.3 million euros in 2024 until the month of November. It represents only 0.2% of the country's total exports, which amounted to 10.9 million tons and 15,852 million euros for the entire fresh fruit and vegetables categories. Among the most sold products in the U.S. market are garlic, cucumber and onion. Between January and November 2024, Spain exported to the United States 17,338 tons of garlic worth 67.5 million euros, 1,865 tons of cucumber valued at 3.7 million euros and 1,562 tons of onions worth 1.5 million euros, according to data from the Spanish customs. Other exported products include mandarines with 1,023 tons and 1.1 million euros, persimmon with 671 tons and 1.3 million euros, table grapes with 499 tons and 1.7 million euros.
Giant market but small destination
The United States ranks 20th among Spain's export destinations and represents only 0.2% of total exports. Therefore, at a general level, it would not be one of the most affected sectors if the United States were to apply tariffs to European products. However, it would have an impact on companies that have already made investments and planned to export to this market. Mexico is the main supplier of fruits and vegetables to the United States, with 11.4 million tons in 2023, which represented 50% of the total imported by the country, which totaled 22.7 million tons that year. In addition, the United States is the world's third largest producer of fruits and vegetables, with 68.7 million tons, behind only China, which produces 781.5 million tons, and India, with 221 million tons, according to FAO data.
