The Belgian supplier is investing in soil health, water-efficient irrigation and diversified production to secure its pea supply from Peru.
FairFruit plans to introduce regenerative agriculture practices across all its contracted farms in Peru and Guatemala by 2035. The company is focusing on healthier soils, more efficient water use and climate-resilient production to maintain reliable supplies of specialty vegetables to European markets.
Water savings in Peru
In 2025, drip and sprinkler irrigation covered 56% of FairFruit’s planted area in Peru, saving an estimated 300,000 m³ of water compared with traditional flood irrigation.
The company has also moved 120 hectares of snow pea and sugar snap production from rain-dependent coastal areas to Arequipa and the Sierra de Huaura, where drip irrigation provides a more reliable water supply.
Production now spans seven to eight growing regions, helping FairFruit offset weather disruptions in individual areas.
Healthier soils, stronger crops
FairFruit has developed Soil Balance, its own blend of beneficial microorganisms designed to improve soil health and moisture retention. The company reports positive results in Peru, including more stable growing conditions and consistent crop quality.
Guy Trachez, FairFruit’s Group Sustainability Manager, said the company aims to complete its transition to regenerative practices by 2035, reduce carbon emissions by 55% and increase carbon storage in soils.
All FairFruit production zones in Peru hold LEAF Marque certification, while 111 growers have GLOBALG.A.P. SPRING certification for responsible water management.
Supporting growers and supply reliability
FairFruit provides growers with pre-season financing exceeding €2,200 per hectare and supports planting programmes covering more than 700 hectares.
The company has also introduced weekly climate monitoring to anticipate crop protection needs and provides customers with regular updates on rainfall, soil moisture and El Niño conditions.
According to David Van de Gehuchte, FairFruit’s Sales and Operations Manager for the EU and UK, improvements in soil health, irrigation and geographic diversification are intended to protect both product quality and supply volumes.
