The state of North Carolina, which produces 54% of American sweet potatoes, is expected to experience a much more favorable season than last season when Hurricane Florence disrupted the countryside.
North Carolina is the largest sweet potato producer in the United States, with 54% of US production. According to statistics from the US Department of Agriculture, in 2018 the state had 82,000 acres (33,184 hectares) of which 78,500 acres (31,767 hectares) in production, the volume harvested totaled 10,990,000 CWT (558,317 tonnes) and the value 236.2 million USD.
This year, after a start of campaign with some problems of drought, rains have arrived. For the professionals of the sector, the harvest is doing well.
With respect to marketing, sweet potatoes are gaining popularity and health benefits are becoming a major selling point. They can be considered as a superfood, constituting an excellent source of vitamins A and C, containing fiber, free of cholesterol, fat and gluten. An average sweet potato contains only 103 calories.
