Fruit fibers will make cars lighter and stronger
MD
Brazilian scientists have used fibers from banana and pineapple to create a new plastic as strong as Kevlar.
This new plastic is 30% lighter and 3 to 4 times stronger than ordinary plastic according to scientists at the University of Sao Paulo who have used the fiber fruit (pineapple and bananas) to the creation of this new plastic.
Other advantages: it would be resistant to heat, solvent, water and oxygen.
Its use in industry should be undertaken within 2 years. The car would be one area of possible applications. This new plastic could build bodyworks, dashboards, bumpers, coatings, but also engine parts. Lighter, this new plastic would consume less fuel.
