In India, the consumption of apples continues to grow, with the increase in population and the demand for healthier food. India produces apples, but the infrastructure needed to transport this fruit in good conditions remains limited.
According to a FAS (Foreign Agricultural Service) report issued by the USDA, the US Department of Agriculture, India's imports of fresh apples rose by more than 70% during the first 9 months of the 2023/24 marketing year (July 2023 - June 2024) compared with the same period in 2022/23.
For the entire marketing year 2023/24 (July 2023 - June 2024), India is expected to reach 510,000 tonnes of imported fresh apples.
India's main supplier countries are Iran (whose volume has almost doubled compared with the previous season and now accounts for 30% of the volume imported); the United States (whose volume has increased by +900% compared with the previous season and reached 20,000 tonnes during the period); the European Union and Turkey, which are recording slight increases in their volumes; and South Africa, which has started shipping during this season.
