Jaen's cherry crop will double this year
Spain
Monday 09 June 2008
The cherry production in the Spanish area of Jaén Sierra Sur, first supplier of this fruit in Andalusia region, will double this campaign compared to last year, when most of the crop was lost due to frosts. Chills this year only affected most early productions, the cherry cooperative Frusampe of Castillo de Locubín (Jaén) informed.
Furthermore, the fact that last year the trees were slightly burdened has favoured an increase of fruit on cherry trees. If it won’t rain during harvesting, until mid July, farmers expect a double crop compared to last campaign.
Jaén’s district of Castillo de Locubín has an approximate production around 5,000 tons of cherries. 85.5 tons of these are organic. Castillo, Torres, Alcalá la Real and Frailes are the most important towns in Jaén Sierra Sur with the highest cherry production, 40% of all Andalusia’s cherry crop.
