In the United States, pumpkin production is widespread across many states, but just 6 states (Illinois, Indiana, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Washington) account for about 45% of the total U.S. production.

According to the latest data from the USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), farmers in the top 6 pumpkin-producing states harvested over 1.2 billion pounds (544,310,844 kilograms) of pumpkin in 2023.

Illinois remained the leading state in 2023 in terms of harvested acreage (15,400 acres/6,232 hectares) and production volume (690,000,000 lbs/312,978,735 kg), exceeding the combined total of the other 5 states. California and Indiana each produced approximately 150,000,000 lbs, Pennsylvania produced around 90,000,000 lbs, Michigan around 80,000,000 lbs, and Washington around 50,000,000 lbs.

The total value of watermelon production from these 6 states in 2023 reached $141 million, representing a 7% increase compared to 2021.

For 3 states (California, Illinois, and Indiana), the value of production increased from 2021 to 2023. Illinois' production value is estimated at $34 million, California's at $30 million, and Indiana's at $28 million. Pennsylvania's production value is estimated at $19 million, Washington's at $16 million, and Michigan's at $14 million.
