Brazil's 2008/09 Sao Paulo orange crop was forecast at 360 million 40.8 kg boxes, down from 365.8 million boxes in 2007/08, state Agriculture Secretary Joao Sampaio said on Monday.
The reduction was due to dry weather in the second half of 2007. Analysts and producers, however, expect an even larger drop in output, of 15 to 20 percent compared with last season.
"We'll likely have 360 million boxes," Sampaio said at Latin America's biggest agricultural fair in Ribeirao Preto.
The first official estimate for the 2008/09 (July/June) crop is expected to be released on May 8. Sao Paulo accounts for about 95 percent of Brazil's orange juice exports.
Early varieties already have started to be harvested, but the bulk of the crop will be gathered in July and August.
