Mongolia, according to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, expects increased potato production. Which will secure its domestic demand.
Food and Agriculture Minister Zagdjav Mendsaikhan said the country is expected to harvest 487,600 tonnes of wheat and 237,000 tonnes of potatoes this fall. This will fully secure its domestic demand for wheat and potatoes.
For several years, potato production has continued to increase in Mongolia thanks to various initiatives such as the MPP (Mongolian Potato Program) which is supported by the CIP (International Potato Center). The program has helped the country increase its potato production, up to 21.8% in certain periods. With in particular new varieties adapted to the agro-ecological conditions of Mongolia, training of young scientists, better methods of culture, production of seeds specially developed for the country.
Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country in the world, with just 3.2 million inhabitants. The majority of the population practices animal husbandry and agricultural production is modest.
