Expected increase in cherry production in 2016/17 summer season
New Zealand Cherry Corp. expects to increase its production of export cherries to 500 tonnes in the summer season of 2016/17. Cherry varieties exported by New Zealand Cherry Corp. include Stella, Romance, Kordia, Lapins, Skeena, Sweetheart, and Staccato and the picking season is late December to early February. New Zealand Cherry Corp. exports premium quality cherries to nine different countries, predominantly in Asia, under its brands Red Envy, Cherry Delight and Kiwi Delight.
In summer 2015/16 the total volume of cherries exported from New Zealand was 3,408 tonnes with New Zealand Cherry Corp. exporting around 10% of that. More than 90% of New Zealand export cherries are grown in Central Otago which is where New Zealand Cherry Corp. is based, and Asia takes the majority of those.
