The summer harvest pear has declined by 10 to 25% in Europe, according to preliminary estimates announced by INTERPERA.
Initial estimates of pear production show a decline of 10 to 25%.
The International Congress for pears, INTERPERA, unveiled the first estimates of the summer harvest of pears. A reduction is expected of 10 to 25% depending on the country and varieties due mainly to problems at flowering.
Professionals hope that this
volume reduction will make marketing easier. Sales of summer varieties have shown a downward trend in recent years.
In 2011, Spain accounted for 17% of European production of pears. About 70% of Spanish production is concentrated around Lleida, accounting for 250,000 tons.
