Spanish "Pozo Sur" launches fresh-cut melons

For the first time in Spain the company Pozo Sur, based in the Murcia region, has introduced on market ready-to-eat melons and watermelons in the supply of fresh-cut fruit. The launch of this innovative product will be at end May under the brand name “Periquetes”, which will be available all year long on the shelves of the main Spanish super- and hypermarkets.
The whole range of “Periquetes” - melon, watermelon, mix of melon and watermelon and melon with ham - is totally made with natural fruits, packed with no artificial colouring or preservatives employing only cool temperature (between 4 and 6 degrees, also during transport) to preserve the fruits. The 250 gr. package makes this an ideal product for consumption in any place or occasion, easily benefiting from the fruits’ qualities in today’s fast way of life.
The sell-by date of “Periquetes” ready-to-eat melons is within seven days, “which guarantees product rotation and freshness”, Pozo Sur managing director Juan López Méndez highlights.
An official presentation of “Periquetes” to the main actors of the fruit and vegetable industry at international level took place in Berlin in February, during the fair Fruit Logistica. “It was a successful meeting, that’s why we are optimistic about the forthcoming launch on market. At the moment we are negotiating with the main Spanish supermarket retailers, which are manifesting good interest in the product”, said López Méndez.
Pozo Sur intends to produce an average of 7,000 pieces of “Periquetes” per day during next summer campaign, wholly destined to the domestic market. However, according to López Méndez, “after focusing the first year on the Spanish market only, in a second stage we will also try to expand abroad, mainly to neighbouring Countries”.
