For this 2020-21 season, the Dutch onion is expected to set a new export volume record. The export ceiling of 40,000 tonnes per week was exceeded for the first time in history.
According to Holland Onion, the export volume will set a new record for this 2020-21 season. Despite a drop in exports in the second half of the season, the export ceiling of 40,000 tonnes per week was exceeded for the first time in history. Weekly export volumes of nearly 50,000 tonnes have even been reached.
In the ranking of Dutch onion destinations, Senegal comes first with a volume exceeding 160,000 tonnes, ahead of Côte d'Ivoire with over 120,000 tonnes and the United Kingdom with over 100,000 tonnes. Mauritania follows with around 60,000 tonnes and Guinea with also 60,000 tonnes, followed by Malaysia with over 40,000 tonnes and the Philippines with 40,000 tonnes.
Africa and Asia are increasing their demand, as are European countries, in particular Great Britain, Ireland, Belgium, Spain and Portugal as well as the Scandinavian countries. The Dutch onion has gained new markets such as Japan, Azerbaijan and Canada. Australia has even quadrupled its imports of onions. These countries, which for the most part are not self-sufficient, demand onions during periods when there is no local harvest available.
About 92% of global onion production is grown and consumed for the local market, the rest is used to address local shortages. With a 20% market share, the Dutch onion sector has played a key role in this area for decades.
