The Panama Canal closed its 2019 fiscal year with record tonnage well above expectations, which is 6.2% higher than the previous year.
For this 2019 fiscal year, the volume totaled 469 million tonnes PC / UMS (Panama Canal tons), an increase of 6.2% compared to 2018 which recorded 442 million tonnes PC / UMS. This result also far exceeds the forecast of 450.7 million tonnes PC / UMS for the 2019 financial year.
The container segment continued to dominate with 164.87 million tonnes of PC / UMS in fiscal year 2019.
For freight, the main routes through the Panama Canal include the East Coast of the United States / Asia, East Coast of the United States / West Coast of South America, Europe / West Coast of South America , East Coast of the United States / West Coast of Central America and the Intercostal Highway of the United States.
The main users of the canal during this fiscal year were the United States, China, Japan, Chile and Mexico.
