Carrefour is in negotiations for the purchase of 130 discount stores from Eki, allowing it to expand its network in Argentina on the cheap.
With Latin America seemingly its only source of growth, Carrefour is in talks to buy the Argentine chain of discount stores Eki.
The second largest global retailer will invest 300 million pesos (about 52 million euros) in the transaction. Eki, which has 130 stores and 2,300 employees, is
insolvent since late 2011.
Carrefour could well extend into a market with very strong growth at a lower cost. Complementing its network by 130 stores where the French retailer has little presence. In 2011, Carrefour achieved 18.6% of its sales in Latin America.
