In Belgium, the cooperatives BelOrta (497 million euros in turnover in 2021) and BFV Belgische Fruitveiling (95 million euros in 2021) are betting on collaboration and integration.
The boards of directors of BelOrta and BFV approved on February 23, 2022, a letter of intent aimed at closer collaboration and integration.
During the year 2021 the 1st interviews took place and have been deepened in recent months to be formalized by this letter of intent. The 2 Belgian cooperatives join forces in order to improve their strength of impact and the cost-effectiveness ratio. An evolution that can benefit both producers (obtaining the best possible price on the market) and customers (an excellent service).
"Our growers face huge challenges in terms of profitability, cost containment, sustainability, innovation and digitalisation. Our discussions quickly showed that we share the same long-term vision and that there are many of similarities in terms of corporate culture and values. These agreements reinforce our belief that we can implement an intensive collaboration. An important step for the further development of the Belgian fruit sector" declared Ludo Lousbergh (president of BFV) and Dirk Bertels (president of BelOrta).
The next phase of the talks will focus on concrete initiatives resulting from the signing of the declaration of intent.
