Belgapom has announced that the Belgian potato trade and processing for 2018 has exceeded the milestone of 5 million tonnes of processed potatoes, a new absolute record.
In 1990, around 500,000 tonnes of potatoes were processed into french fries, mashed potatoes, chips or even flakes or granulates. And 28 years later, the sector can boast an increase of 1,000%.
The entire Belgian potato chain contributed to this growth: in addition to producers, service providers and machinery suppliers also experienced strong growth. They become global players in the field of product and technology innovation. The sector continues to invest for the future, both in quantity and quality.
Belgium is the world's largest exporter of frozen potatoes, exporting to more than 150 countries. Demand for potato products is still on the rise in global markets. The growing middle class in Asia and Latin America is driving demand for finished food products, including Belgian fries.
