Stock and export of potatoes in France in 2007
France
Wednesday 26 March 2008
2007 crop stocks at the end of January were estimated to be 20% higher than for the 2006 crop at the same date, and 8% less than the 2005 crop. More free market stocks remain than in most recent seasons. The general export trade continues to progress well, but volume is slightly lower than last years record level. From August 2007 to January 2008 total movement was 847,300 t, compared with 962,100 t in 2007. Ware exports to GB are higher than last year with a total of 62,200 delivered from 1st August to the end of January 2007, compared with 29,500 t in 2006 and 26,700 t in 2005 during the same period.
However, some traders feel these estimates are on the low side. There have been large reductions in deliveries to Spain, who are using more own supplies at present. Spain is also exporting to Portugal which is reducing demand for French ware exports there. Orders from Belgium are also lighter than last year due to their high local stock levels. Export material is being sold at low prices, which is putting pressure on other market sectors, as well as frustrating Dutch and Belgian exporters.
