Phenomenal progress for Polish pumpkin production

In 2022, the area under pumpkin cultivation in Poland reached 8,900 hectares, with a harvest of 400,000 tonnes (Photo: farmer.pl).
An increase of +700% in the area cultivated and an increase of +733.33% in the volume of pumpkins harvested in Poland, according to Eurostat, comparing 2014 figures with those for 2022.
According to Eurostat, in 2022 the area under pumpkin cultivation in Poland reached 8,900 hectares, up 700% on the 1,100 hectares cultivated in 2014. The Polish pumpkin harvest in 2022 reached 400,000 tonnes, up 733.33% on the 48,000 tonnes produced in 2014.
This phenomenal growth in Polish production is thought to be the result of growing consumer demand and the ease with which pumpkins can be grown, requiring neither good soil nor major investment.
In the EU in 2022, pumpkin production exceeded 1 million tonnes, with Polish production, at 400,000 tonnes, accounting for 40% of the total. Behind Poland were France (207,000 tonnes/20%), Spain (128,000 tonnes/9%) and Portugal (81,000 tonnes/8%). These 5 countries accounted for 77% of total EU production.
