The 1st shipments of Carabao mangoes, also known as Manila mangoes, are due to arrive in Australia in the next few days.
Local media reports state that the Philippine Embassy in Canberra, Australia, has said that protocols for exporting mangoes to Australia have been in place since 2016, but that the industry in the Philippines is now ready to begin exports during the winter season in Australia.
In Australia the mango season generally starts around September and ends in March. The winter season is the best time for fresh mango imports from the Philippines.
The Philippines have been exporting dried mangoes to Australia for several years. But the total volume of fresh mangoes to be imported from the Philippines this year is unknown, according to the Australian Mango Industry Association.
Australia, according to data from Hort Innovation, imported 726 tonnes of fresh mangoes from Thailand, India, Mexico, Brazil and Pakistan last year.
