The 1st quarter of 2022 is satisfactory for fruit exports which recorded a 2% increase in volume compared to the same period of 2021. In terms of value, the amount is similar to the previous year. Melon, lemon and mango were the most exported fruits.
According to Abrafrutas (Associação Brasileira dos Produtores Exportadores de Frutas e Derivados), during the 1st quarter of 2022 Brazil exported 250,000 tons of fresh fruit, approximately +2% compared to the same period of 2021. If the volume is higher , the value is similar with revenues of 196 million USD.
.Melon: 4% increase in volume for melon exports, with around 76,000 tonnes of fruit shipped, turnover reached 47.1 million USD.
.Lemon: 20% increase, with approximately 37,000 tonnes of fruit shipped. This performance is due to the more attractive prices on the foreign market compared to the domestic market, but also to reduced production in a few countries (Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala) where more Brazilian lemons were able to be shipped, as well as to the opening of the market Chilean with the 1st shipments in February.
.Mango: Mango was the most exported Brazilian fruit in 2021 and during this 1st quarter of 2022 the volume exported increased by 9%. But the heavy rains in the São Francisco region, the main production center, directly affected the quality of the fruit. This poor quality resulted in an 8% drop in value.
The weather conditions affected the production of grapes and apples. The rains affected grape crops and the low production led to a drop in exports of 59% in volume and 61% in value. Apple production was affected by the drought which led to a reduction in fruit size and a drop in exports.
The sector remains confident, despite the logistical problems and the price of inputs that have hurt exports, and estimates that new markets will continue to lead to a 2 to 3% increase in Brazilian fruit exports in the next quarter.
