In 2023, exports of Ecuadorian pitahaya marked an impressive 72% growth compared to the previous year and reached a record 171 million dollars in sales.
Pitahaya cultivation in Ecuador began four decades ago in the canton of Palora, Morona Santiago province.
The United States continues to be the main destination for Ecuadorian pitahaya, accounting for 80% of exports. In addition, markets such as Hong Kong, Spain, Peru and Canada also play an important role in the international expansion of this exotic fruit. Pitahaya production is not only limited to Morona Santiago, but has spread to 10 other provinces in Ecuador, diversifying between varieties such as yellow and red pitahaya, and generating more than 3,000 additional jobs in the region.
With an eye on further strengthening the export sector, Ecuadorian producers see the Chinese market as a promising growth opportunity. The anticipated entry into force of a trade agreement between Ecuador and China, scheduled for May 2024, is expected to eliminate the 20 percent tariff currently imposed on Ecuadorian pitahaya, opening new doors for its commercialisation in Asia.
