Chile reviews new model for key export port

A proposed port management change could improve logistics efficiency and support Chile’s export flow during peak seasons.
Chile’s fruit export logistics could benefit from a planned change in the management of Valparaíso port terminals.
Chile’s National Economic Prosecutor’s Office has supported the joint concession of terminals 1 and 2 at the Port of Valparaíso. The proposal would place both terminals under one operator, instead of keeping them under separate administrations.
According to the technical analysis, this model could make port operations more efficient. A single operator would be able to manage space, vessel schedules and equipment with more flexibility. This could help reduce waiting times for ships and improve cargo transfer costs.
For Chilean exporters, the decision is important because port efficiency has a direct impact on international trade. Fresh fruit shipments depend on fast, reliable logistics, especially during peak export seasons.
The authority said the joint concession could also make the tender more attractive to major international port operators. The final decision will be taken by Chile’s competition tribunal, which must assess whether the model includes enough safeguards against monopoly risks and unfair tariffs.
If approved, the project could reshape the logistics role of Valparaíso and strengthen Chile’s port capacity for future export growth.
