The health crisis has not had any negative effects for Californian nuts, which have recorded an increase in their sales both on their domestic market and on their export markets.
According to the Californian Walnut Board, sales on the domestic market increased by 5.1% during the 2019/20 campaign and then by 16.8% between February and August 2020. The peak of the pandemic where Americans did more cooking in home and bought more healthy snacks.
In foreign markets, Germany remained the top destination for exports, with shipments rebounding during the 2019/20 crop year, posting growth of 22.5% over the past 4 years, mainly thanks to retail trade. In Spain, the Californian walnut remained the best-selling nut in the retail trade, showing strong growth during the 8 weeks of containment, according to IRI data.
For California Walnut Board, these observed trends will continue and nuts will be used even more in the food industry for different products, as consumer demand for healthy, nutrient-dense snacks grows.
