Brazilian exports decline

Another negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, the fresh fruit export sector experienced a catastrophic May. Exports have reached the lowest levels in 17 years.

 

 

 

After a bad month of April, the fresh fruit export sector had an even worse May. Exportshave dropped to the lowest levels in 17 years.

 

 

 

According to data from the Ministry of Economy, compared to the same period last year, the volume of exports of fresh fruits such as melon, mango, papaya, fig and avocado fell by 47% in May.

 

 

 

This decrease is due to the lack of planes to transport the goods. Fresh fruit goes into the hold of passenger planes which, due to the coronavirus pandemic, have stopped circulating. Reopening European and other economies could ease the sector, but exports will take a long time to return to normal levels.

 

 

 

The European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States account for more than 80% of Brazil's fruit exports.
