New project for English blackcurrants
United Kingdom
Wednesday 09 April 2008
West Midlands growers established a sustainable supply of named variety Frozen Blackcurrants for use in manufacturing. Traditionally English Blackcurrants are used by Glaxo Smithkline for their Ribena products with a total harvest in the region of 12-14000t per annum, but with the advent of other fruit drinks, smoothies etc, coming to the market the demand for the product has reduced giving an opportunity to re-establish English grown fruit in to the UK market.
Latest research has discovered that one blackcurrant fruit outshines the rest when it comes to health boosting benefits. The combined beneficial composition and impact in health related studies means that Blackcurrants can claim to be the No1 "Superfruit" in England.
A new facility is being developed at Windmill Hill site in conjunction with Anthony Snell of AJ & CI Snell who was recently awarded the accolade of Best Soft Fruit Grower 2007 as well as Best Overall Grower 2007.
