In Turkey, the expansion project for the port of Mersin, located in the south of the country on the Mediterranean Sea, has just been launched. In the future, the port will be able to accommodate mega-container ships and its capacity will increase from 2.8 million TEU to 3.6 million TEU (20-foot TEU-equivalent).
The Mersin port expansion project was launched with a ceremony in the presence of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure. According to local media, after the completion of this expansion, 2 mega container ships with a length of 400 meters (1,312 feet) will be able to dock simultaneously.
Port capacity will increase from 2.8 million TEU to 3.6 million TEU (20-foot TEU-equivalent).
The international port of Mersin is the largest port in Turkey with an area of 112 hectares. It is one of the main container ports in the south of the country. It contributes significantly to Turkey's foreign trade. It is connected to all the main ports of the world thanks to more than 20 shipping companies that call there regularly.
