The price of lemons in India has reached surprising levels, shocking consumers and changing their buying habits. While online they sell for 225 rupees per kilo (2.52 euro) and greengrocers sell them for 250 rupees (2.80 euro), the wholesale price remains at 100 rupees (1.12 euro).
This rise is attributed to increased demand, driven by religious festivities such as Ramadan and Navratri, in addition to high temperatures that make lemony soft drinks more popular. As a result, many households and restaurants are eliminating lemons from their shopping list, opting for instant alternatives instead of the classic fresh lemonade.
APMC secretary Sanjay Patel anticipates a decrease in wholesale prices towards the end of the month with the arrival of new crops. Currently, wholesale prices vary by region, and higher retail prices have been observed in areas such as Bopal, Satellite and Vastrapur, west of Ahmedabad, where they reach Rs. 250 per kilo (€2.80).
