The current strawberry campaign in the Spanish province of Huelva has prolonged throughout the month of May and is expected to last until the beginning of June, according to José Manuel Romero president of Huelva’s association of strawberry producers and exporters Freshuelva.
The evaluations possible at the moment, before being able to make a final assessment once the campaign is concluded, reveal that the current campaign is similar to that of last year, with “the exception that there are fewer volumes on the market, maybe due to the rains registered last April”, president Romero pointed out.
“At the same period last year the strawberry campaign was practically concluded in Huelva - Romero highlighted - and gave acceptable final results. Therefore, since the current campaign is getting similar prices - with fewer volumes in April but more in May -, it is possible that the current campaign will register final results similar to those of last year”, Romero explained.
Finally, Freshuelva president declared that he doesn’t agree with the appraisal made by the agricultural organization GOAG, whose president Juan Antonio Camacho forecasted a “terrible strawberry season due to the very bad prices the product was getting on the market”.
“It is too early to make a final estimate of the campaign on its whole”, Freshuleva president reiterated.
