In Valencia (Spain), the new Kino mandarin variety will help extend the marketing season until May or even June.
Obtained by the University of California Riverside (UCR) and managed by Eurosemillas, Kino is a mandarin variety that is easy to peel, very juicy (49% juice), few seeds and extraordinarily sweet (up to 15.8 ºBrix).
Eurosemillas will give priority in the granting of licenses for the production of the Kino mandarin to the producers of the Valencian Association of Farmers Ava-Asaja.
With this new variety, the Valencian sector will be able to extend the mandarin marketing season from March until May or even until the first weeks of June.
The Kino variety harvests the second or third year after being planted and produces 55 to 60 tons per hectare. It is easy to handle, it does not need hormonal treatments for setting, or after harvesting. Its diameter is 68 mm.
