The price of tomatoes has reached a historic low. European producers have denounced the massive imports from Morocco and inadequate controls.
Tomato growers from Spain, France and Italy observe the collapse of the market and claim that the control on Moroccan imports are ineffective.
The contact group 'Tomato' of producers from Spain, Franch and Italy says that there is a serious market crisis. Prices have collapsed and reached a low of €36 per 100 kg
. They claim this is due to large quantities of tomatoes exported by Morocco and a lack of control.
This situation is likely to worsen because of the crisis in the main production areas, particularly in Spain, where the unemployment rate is already high. The group intends to ask the European Commission for a better implementation of the measures and better border control.
