The UK and the European Union have yet to find an agreement on their future relationship. The scenario of a no-deal Brexit is becoming more than likely. Without a specific trade agreement, the regulations applied will be those of the WTO (World Trade Organization).
Over the past few weeks, FruitVegetablesEUROPE has actively contacted the EU and UK institutions regarding the ongoing trade negotiations. Highlighting the catastrophic impact that UK customs duties will have on the Fruit & Vegetable production / export sector
The planned customs taxes would make it difficult for products from the EU to export to the UK, while products from other origins will benefit from 0% taxes following bilateral agreements with the UK.
During the various discussions and working groups, FruitVegetablesEUROPE proposed that the future trade agreement should include a free trade area with regulatory cooperation, no customs taxes for fruits and vegetables from the EU, quick procedures and the are establishing "green lines" for the transport of perishable goods.
This would allow the flow of fresh fruit and vegetable exports to the United Kingdom to be maintained, according to Ms. Alba Ridao-Bouloumié, Secretary General FruitVegetablesEUROPE, and thus avoid market uncertainty and speculation.
