Diets rich in Fruits & Vegetables play a key role in the prevention of COPD.
Smokers, former smokers, increase your consumption of Fruits & Vegetables! A recent scientific study gives them a new benefit of protecting lung health.
Published in Thorax the study followed the respiratory health of over 44,000 Swedish, aged 45 to 79 years. Overall, 38.5% had never smoked, 63% had smoked at some point in their lives and 24% were smokers.
The study investigated the dietary factors involved in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), which currently affects 64 million people worldwide. The main risk factor for COPD is smoking.
Scientists estimate that consuming 5 servings of F & V can reduce the risk of developing COPD by up to 40%. Foods that seem to have the strongest influence to reduce these risks are green leafy vegetables, peppers, apples and pears.
