In the 4 NEPG countries (Belgium, Germany, France, Netherlands), the total potato area would increase and total 507,336 hectares (Photo: twitter.com/northgrowers).
The decline in the area of potatoes in the NEPG zone has been halted. According to the first estimates for the 2022 campaign, the surface area increased by +2% compared to 2021 and by +0.9% compared to the average over 5 years.
NEPG (North-Western Potato Growers) brings together the national organizations of 4 Western European countries (Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands). According to the 1st estimates, the total area of potatoes would increase in the 4 countries and would total 507,336 hectares, i.e. +2.0% compared to 2021 (497,197 hectares) and +0.9% compared to the average over 5 years (502,723 hectares).
While this increase in surface area is good news, after the decline observed in 2021, the sector is not immune to the vagaries of the weather (heat wave, heavy rainfall, drought, etc.) which could occur and influence yield end and quality.
Another uncertainty for the sector, the production costs which have not ceased to increase over the last 12 months and which could still increase.
NEPG (North-Western Potato Growers) brings together the national organizations ABS, FIWAP, FWA, PCA (Belgium), REKA (Germany), UNPT (France) and VTA (the Netherlands).
