135,000mt mango export target set for 2008

The export of mango was 30,000 metric tons annually five years back but due to farmers-friendly policies of the government, it has now reached 135,000 metric tons.
This was stated at a seminar held under the aegis of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Rahim Yar Khan here on Thursday. Addressing the seminar, Deputy Director, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Muhammad Alamgir Khan said 135,000 metric tons mango export target has been set for 2008 season. "Last year huge foreign exchange had been earned by exporting 124,000 metric tons of fine quality mangoes". He said with the increase of the export of the mangoes, the farmers would also get due return of their crop. He hoped that the export would reach 300,000 metric tons during next three to five years owing to farmer-friendly policies.
The official said that farmers can save the wastage of the mango crop worth about million of rupees annually while adopting latest technology of post-harvesting. Assistant Manager, Pakistan Horticulture Development Export Asif Mahmood Qureshi and President Chamber of Commerce and Industry R Y Khan Ch Mahmood Ahmed also addressed the seminar.
