The year 2024 looked promising for Kenyan avocado exports to China. But for the first 7 months of 2024, the results are very different.
Local media report that, according to Chinese customs data, Kenya exported just 742,934 kg of avocados to China in the first 7 months of 2024. That's -79.7% compared with the same period in 2023, which totaled 3,674,463 kg.
According to market analysts, this drop is the result of choices made by Kenyan exporters. Shipments to the European market were preferred. China still accounts for a small share of Kenyan avocado exports, with 4,342 tons in 2023, whereas exports to the EU in 2023 totaled 64,980 tons, almost 15 times as much.
In Asia, avocado consumption is barely 0.05 kg/year/capita, while Europe consumes 1.6 kg/year/capita.
