Mercadona already has 60 stores in Portugal

Mercadona is accelerating its development in the Portuguese country, having opened 11 new stores in the last 12 months.
The leading Spanish chain decided in 2016 to internationalize with Portugal. Named "Irmãdona" the Portuguese subsidiary accumulates successes based on its same "total quality" model. The fruit and vegetable section is as in Spain more important in its strategy. Mercadona now has 60 supermarkets in Portugal, having opened 11 in the last 12 months. It now has 7,000 highly committed workers, of whom 1,700 will be new hires by 2024. Mercadona's accumulated investment in the Portuguese country totals €1,093 million and reaches €1,778 million in annual turnover.
New logistics and technology centers
In July 2024, Mercadona started up a new logistics center in Almeirim (Santarém). It involves €287 million of investment and the creation of 600 new jobs. 25% of its energy needs come from renewable energy. The Irmãdona subsidiary also created a software development center in Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto) to assist in the reengineering of more than 300 internal systems and applications.
