In Italy, as in other countries that have taken containment measures, the attention paid to food safety and quality has greatly increased, leading to an increase in sales of organic products.
A study carried out by AssoBio, in collaboration with Nielsen, has just shown that sales of food products increased in March by 19.6% in large retailers and by 26.2% in small local supermarkets.
Sales of fruit and vegetables from conventional agriculture increased by 18.2% compared to March 2019. A real boom was recorded for organic fruits and vegetables, which posted growth of 24.8%. According to AssoBio, Italians forced to stay at home have paid more attention to their food and bought many more organic products.
AssoBio is the national association of companies processing and distributing organic and natural products. The association was founded in 2006 by 11 of the largest Italian organic companies and currently has 90 members in the food industry.
