In Colombia, the cultivation of blueberries has been booming, with the number of areas growing two-to-one in two years.
According to a study conducted by Asocolblue (Asociación Colombiana de Blueberries), in 2017 the country had only 120 hectares of blueberries, this year the areas reach 450 hectares and in the medium term, in about 2 years, the areas will exceed 1000 hectares. Between 2019 and 2020, production could total 7 700 tonnes.
Colombia has climatic and geographical advantages enabling it to produce blueberries 52 weeks a year. This advantage is ideal for exporting to markets such as the United States and the EU that request this fruit all year round.
With the expansion of its production, Colombia could enter the TOP 10 of the world's largest producers and exporters of blueberries.
