In Brazil, the melon season has started well and the sector just recorded remarkable results in September, with increases in volume and value.
Abrafutas reports that according to Secex data, the volume of melons exported in September was 42% higher than that exported in September 2019. And for the last 2 months (August and September 2020), melon exports totaled 38 000 tonnes, which is 36% higher than the same period last year, with revenue of $25 million, which is 35% higher than the same period last year.
According to professionals, these results are linked to the strong European demand for Brazilian fruits, as local availability is low. In major melon producing countries, such as Spain, where a reduction in area has been reported, in addition to climatic conditions and labor availability issues.
Another favorable factor, many European countries had adopted less restrictive measures to contain the pandemic, which favored shipments of Brazilian fruits to Europe. But for the next few months, if professionals expect similar results, they fear the emergence of new outbreaks of COVID-19 in Europe and more restrictive measures that could slow Brazilian exports.
