Asda will increase its number of smaller stores, but will keep similar prices to its supermarkets
The second largest supermarket chain in the UK will expand its number of smaller stores following the successful conversion of 60 former Netto stores bought by Asda.
Asda is expected to open 180 smaller stores by the end of the year and then increase the number to 250 next year. Asda calls the outlets "supermarkets" but they will be smaller
than its traditional "hypermarket" format. They are more "convenience" size with the largest covering 5000 square feet (464m2).
These stores offer up to 10,000 grocery items at the same price as Asda supermarkets. They will compete with Tesco Metro and Sainsbury Local use higher prices for these formats.
